Let’s take a second to pause and reminisce. I would tell you to close your eyes and imagine this, but then you wouldn’t be able to finish reading… HA! Okay, so let’s do this. Take a second to finish reading this next paragraph and then pause to think about it.
You are in Target. You look around and see an overload of products everywhere. You came for one thing, to buy some new skin-care products to help you glow in the sun this summer while still protecting your skin from the harmful UV rays. Starring back at you on the shelves are a multitude of beauty products. They all claim to do different things. You start to become overwhelmed by your options and the claims they are throwing out at you. Then, out of the corner of your eye, you see a cute little bottle that seems to speak to you. It has packaging with a minimal design, a style you always vibe with, and simply states “Face cream to help you glow while staying protected.” Voila! That seals the deal. Not only is the packaging cute and seems to be made specifically for you, but it even solves the exact problem you are facing! You grab the tube of face cream and happily hand over your hard-earned dollar to make the purchase.
There you have it, friends… This is the power of great packaging. The way you present your products to consumers has a major impact on how they perceive your brand/business. This blog post is going to outline three key ways packaging can increase your revenue.
1. Consumers will pay more for products with pretty packaging.
As silly as this may sound, you know it is true. I’ve done it. I’m sure you have done it. You see something in the store that may be the same thing as the product next to it, but you are willing to pay an extra couple of bucks to purchase the one that looks better because you perceive it as being of higher quality. This case is also true when you are ordering products online. Think back to how you feel when you make an order from your favorite online boutique and it arrives at your doorstep in a beautiful box and wrapped in brand-patterned tissue paper with a branded thank you card included. You felt like royalty when you opened it, didn’t you? It was almost like getting a present on Christmas morning. Because the packaging evoked this type of feeling in you, you most likely become more willing to make future purchases from this boutique even if their prices are a little bit higher than what you usually spend. The fact of the matter is that packaging, though simple, can greatly increase your current and future sales.
2. Product Packaging Draws Attention.
Like in the above scenario when you imagined yourself shopping in Target, product packaging plays a huge role when products are being sold in physical locations. The options are endless when you are shopping in stores such as Target, Walmart, or T.J. Maxx. You will need a way for your product to stand out amongst competitors and appeal to your ideal customer. Product packaging allows you to dazzle your ideal customer and draw their attention away from the other options. For example, if you know your target market is all about pink and glitter, you can encapsulate this appeal in your packaging. Their eyes will immediately be drawn to your item. Whoever, your target market is, nail down their style, and make sure your product packaging is reflective of what they like.
3. Packaging is a source of information.
This key factor is especially true if your product is a little bit difficult to understand at first glance. Your product can be the best thing to ever grace this Earth, but if people don’t understand it and how it will benefit them, they won’t want to purchase it. I noticed a prime example of this today while shopping.
I saw a wine bottle holder that is meant to stick to your shower wall. The actual holder in itself looked rather silly. If it was thrown in a bin without the proper packaging, people likely would not be able to tell what it was. However, its packaging did a great job of providing information in a quick, easy-to-understand way. The wine bottle holder was displayed with a picture of a wine bottle sitting in it and stated boldly “PAIRS WELL WITH BUBBLE BATHS.” I wasn’t even in the store looking for anything of the likes, but it immediately caught my attention while I was quickly walking by and made me stop in my tracks. I took a picture and am planning on going back to order a few for friends when Christmas rolls around. This is the power of product packaging. Great packaging tells your consumer what your product does and why they should want it.
The ways packaging can benefit your business are endless. The up-front investment in initial packaging design will pay for itself ten-fold once you begin seeing your revenue numbers climb.
